The west front with the two towers was built in the final stages of the first building phase,
and given a face-lift around 1506. Sadly, the Lantern of the North, as Elgin Cathedral is still affectionately known,
fell victim to the Reformation of 1560. The programme of reconstruction which had continued
for nearly two hundred years after the burning, came to a halt. The cathedral fabric soon began to suffer, and
it was not until the early 19th Century that any effort was made to halt further decay
