Oddquine's Moray in Words and Pictures

Forres Coat of Arms

The Royal Burgh of Forres came into existence in the reign of King David I, although the earliest written charter dates from 1496.The Coat of Arms depicts St. Lawrence, a Spanish-born saint with no connections to Scotland. It is assumed that his adoption was a result of the influx of Norman immigrants to the area and their subsequent influence, as he was popular among them. He is shown in his martyr's robes, with flames and the gridiron on which legend has it that he was grilled alive. Since the re-organisation of local Government the Arms have been reproduced on the letterhead of the Forres Community Council.
